Dürrenstein, Mountain summit in South Tyrol, Italy
Dürrenstein, also known as Picco di Vallandro, is a mountain peak in the Dolomites located between the Praz valley and the Landro valley. It rises to approximately 2,800 meters and creates a distinctive outline against the Alpine landscape.
The mountain served as a boundary between the historical regions of South Tyrol and Belluno since medieval times. This border role shaped the geographical and political identity of the surrounding valleys.
Local mountaineering traditions include annual gatherings at the summit cross, where Alpine clubs from surrounding valleys maintain regional climbing practices.
Most hikers approach the summit via marked trails from the Prato Piazza plateau. The final meters to the peak require the use of fixed ropes and secure passages, so sure-footedness and a steady head for heights are important.
The summit area offers views of the Cristallo and Fanes mountain groups that appear particularly striking from this vantage point. This perspective makes the location a preferred spot for mountain photographers.
