Gola di Fanes

Gola di Fanes is a limestone gorge carved through the Dolomites, defined by steep walls and multiple waterfalls spilling down the rock faces. The narrow canyon reveals how water has shaped the mountain landscape over millennia.

Mountain climbers from the region developed two via ferrata routes through the gorge during the 1970s, creating safer ways to descend into the canyon's depths. These marked climbing paths made the site accessible to a wider range of visitors.

Educational signs throughout the gorge display Italian, Latin, and Ladin languages, showing how this place reflects the linguistic mix of the Dolomites.

The starting point is the Pian de Loa parking area at roughly 1,360 meters elevation, where trail number 10 leads toward the High Bridge. Sturdy footwear and a head for heights are important, as the path includes narrow rock passages and exposed sections.

One climbing route descends directly beneath a waterfall, requiring climbers to traverse through the falling water itself. This unusual experience combines the thrill of being near the cascade with the challenge of the wet rock.
