Military shrine of Pocol, Military cemetery and museum in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy.
The Military Shrine of Pocol is a tower-like monument standing 48 meters tall with a two-level base structure. Its interior corridors contain niches along the walls that hold remains and commemorative plaques for fallen soldiers.
The shrine was built between 1932 and 1935 under engineer Giovanni Raimondi's direction. It holds the remains of thousands of Italian soldiers who died on the Dolomitic front during World War I.
A fresco by Pio Solero inside the small chapel shows an Alpine soldier keeping watch over a fallen comrade. This image captures the local memory of sacrifice and remains visible to anyone walking through the memorial.
The site is located along the road leading to Falzarego Pass and is accessible by car or on foot. The interior corridors can feel narrow and dimly lit, so it helps to allow time for your eyes to adjust.
A statue of the Lion of Saint Mark stands at the entrance, originally moved from Piazza Venezia in Venice. This sculpture connects the memorial to Ampezzo's historical ties with the Venetian Republic.
