Parco regionale dei Laghi Suviana e Brasimone, Regional nature reserve in Metropolitan City of Bologna, Italy
Parco regionale dei Laghi Suviana e Brasimone is a protected area with two artificial lakes surrounded by dense forests of beech, oak, and coniferous trees. The landscape spans varied elevations with interconnected woodland zones that create different ecological habitats across the terrain.
The two lakes were created through dam projects during the 20th century for energy generation and resource management. Protection as a regional park came later as these artificial environments developed ecological value over time.
Medieval remnants persist in villages like Bargi, Baigno, Badi, and Stagno, while the stone houses of abandoned Chiapporato stand on Mount Calvi's ridge.
The park offers activities like hiking, fishing, kayaking, and windsurfing on both lakes. Visit during warmer months when water activities and outdoor recreation are most accessible.
The area hosts a water research center and an ENEA department focused on energy and sustainable technology research. Few visitors realize this protected landscape doubles as an active scientific facility.
