Metropolitan City of Bologna, Metropolitan city in Emilia-Romagna, Italy
The Metropolitan City of Bologna is an administrative division in Emilia-Romagna that includes the regional capital and surrounding communities spread across roughly 3,700 square kilometers (about 1,430 square miles). The territory stretches from the Apennine foothills in the south to the Po Plain in the north, linking rural districts with urban centers.
This administrative structure came into being on January 1, 2015, replacing the former province in order to coordinate governance and planning across this part of Emilia-Romagna. The transformation preserved existing municipal boundaries while introducing new responsibilities for urban development and regional cooperation.
The territory contains numerous medieval towers, churches, and extended porticoes, with the University of Bologna serving as a central educational institution since 1088.
The metropolitan area includes dozens of municipalities connected by regional trains, bus lines, and roadways that let travelers move between different parts of the territory. Many smaller towns and rural areas are most easily reached by car or through local transport services.
The region maintains a population density of 271 inhabitants per square kilometer, with residents distributed among diverse municipalities from Anzola dell'Emilia to Imola.
