Basilica of Saint Francis
Basilica of Saint Francis, Gothic minor basilica in Bologna, Italy
The Basilica of Saint Francis is a Gothic church of national importance in Bologna. Eight side chapels frame the choir area, while slender octagonal pillars support the high ceiling vaults.
Pope Gregory IX laid the foundation stone in 1236, and fourteen years later the building stood complete. Between 1886 and 1906, builders renewed large sections of the structure following an earlier partial collapse.
The name honors Francis of Assisi, whose order built the church and still manages it today. The high vaults and slender pillars follow French examples and appear unusual for Italian building traditions of that period.
The church interior is accessible most days, but visitors should remain respectful and stay toward the back during services. Comfortable shoes help when walking through the side aisles and chapels for an extended visit.
A brother named Andrea suffered injuries in 1254 when parts of the structure gave way during construction. Later restoration efforts lasted two decades and saved the building from further decay.

Bologna offers many photography subjects, from medieval towers to Renaissance palaces. The covered arcades stretch for miles, connecting squares, churches, and historic buildings. The Neptune Fountain stands beside Piazza Maggiore, the heart of the city. The Two Towers rise above the streets and have been landmarks for centuries. Santo Stefano Basilica consists of several connected churches, while the Sanctuary of the Madonna of San Luca sits on a hill, reached by one of the longest porticoes in the world. The university district shows buildings from medieval and Renaissance periods, including the Archiginnasio with its anatomical theater. The botanical garden provides a quiet green space, and parks like Giardini Margherita and Montagnola Park offer places to rest. Smaller discoveries like the window on Via Piella give views of the Moline canal. Palaces, libraries, and museums complete the photographic range of this city that has kept its historic character.
