Bologna, University city in Emilia-Romagna, Italy
Bologna is a large city in northern Emilia-Romagna, known for its university and arcades. The city spreads across a flat plain and is marked by medieval towers, red-painted buildings, and covered walkways that link streets and squares.
The city began in ancient times as a Roman settlement and grew into an important trading center with its own university during the Middle Ages. In the 12th century, the famous towers were built, of which about twenty remain today.
Locals gather in Piazza Maggiore to chat, share aperitifs, and watch the activity on the square. Students, residents, and visitors walk through the covered arcades while shops and cafés beneath them stay open late into the evening.
The main railway station lies west of the historic center, and from there the old town is reachable on foot in about 15 minutes. Many sights are located near Piazza Maggiore and can be reached comfortably on foot.
Under the vaulted roof of a side arcade in Piazza Maggiore, there is an acoustic phenomenon where whispers can be heard across several meters of distance. This effect is created by the particular construction of the arches and was likely used for secret conversations during the Middle Ages.
