Arca di San Domenico

Arca di San Domenico, Medieval marble sarcophagus in Basilica of San Domenico, Bologna, Italy

Description

The Arca di San Domenico is a medieval marble sarcophagus in the Basilica of San Domenico featuring intricate carved reliefs on all four sides. The carvings include religious scenes and sculptural figures created by different artists working across multiple generations.

History

Construction began in 1264 under Nicola Pisano and involved many important sculptors working on the project. Michelangelo was among the artists who contributed to this work, which continued for nearly five centuries.

Culture

The monument represents the veneration of Saint Dominic through carved scenes depicting his life and spiritual significance. These images have made the tomb a place of pilgrimage and devotion for centuries.

Practical

The sarcophagus is located in a dedicated chapel along the right side of the main nave and is accessible during regular visiting hours. Take time to walk around all four sides to see the full range of sculptural details and carved panels.

Did you know?

Behind the main tomb sits a small chapel containing a golden reliquary that holds the head of the saint, handcrafted by Jacopo Roseto in 1383. This precious object is frequently overlooked by visitors who focus only on the main sculptural work.
