Arca di San Domenico, Medieval marble sarcophagus in Basilica of San Domenico, Bologna, Italy
The Arca di San Domenico displays intricate marble carvings on all four sides, featuring religious scenes and statues created by multiple sculptors.
Construction of the sarcophagus began in 1264 under Nicola Pisano, with contributions from Michelangelo and other artists spanning nearly five centuries of work.
The monument houses the remains of Saint Dominic, founder of the Dominican Order, and includes six carved panels depicting his life and miracles.
Visitors can observe the monument in the dedicated chapel along the right nave of the Basilica of San Domenico during regular opening hours.
The golden reliquary containing Saint Dominic's head rests in a small chapel at the back of the tomb, crafted by Jacopo Roseto in 1383.
