Savena, Borough in Bologna, Italy
Savena is a borough in the southeastern part of Bologna, named after the stream that runs along its western edge. The southern part of the borough rises toward the hills, while the northern section is flatter and more densely built up.
The land that makes up this borough was for centuries used for farming and crossed by old trade routes linking Bologna to the Adriatic coast. The borough as an administrative unit was created in 1985, when Bologna reorganized its districts.
The name of the borough comes from the Savena stream, which still runs along part of its border and gives the area its identity. Local parks and small squares are used daily by families and older residents who meet there in the late afternoon.
The borough sits close to Bologna's main train station and is easy to reach by bus from the city center. The southern, hillier part takes more effort to explore on foot, so comfortable shoes are a good idea if you plan to walk there.
At the border with San Lazzaro, there is a military cemetery where soldiers of the Second Polish Corps are buried, men who took part in the liberation of Bologna in 1945. It is one of the few places in the region where the Polish role in the Italian campaign can be seen and felt directly.
