Museum of the Risorgimento, Bologna, History museum in Bologna, Italy.
The Museum of the Risorgimento sits on the ground floor of Casa Carducci and displays exhibitions about Italian unification through artifacts, documents, and manuscripts from the 1800s. The rooms contain weapons, flags, and correspondence that document the struggle for unity and independence.
The museum opened in 1893 following the success of a traveling exhibition called the 'temple to the Risorgimento' during the 1888 Emiliana Exposition. That original show inspired the creation of a permanent collection documenting the period from 1796 to 1918.
The museum displays everyday objects from the unification period, including uniforms and personal items that show how Bologna transformed from papal rule toward new political ideas. You can see how people from different walks of life lived through this era.
The museum has a research library and archive of historical documents available for visitors to examine the materials in detail. The collection is well organized and allows you to follow different threads of the period in depth.
The collection includes weapons belonging to Joachim Murat, among them hunting rifles and a flintlock pistol made by Boutet in 1804, showing how high-ranking European figures of the time were connected to Bologna. These objects offer a surprising view of the personal ties military leaders had to this place.
