The museum opened in 1893 following the success of a temporary exhibition called 'temple to the Risorgimento' during the 1888 Esposizione Emiliana.
The collection includes military equipment, Masonic objects, and proclamations that demonstrate the transformation of Bologna from papal rule to republican ideals.
The museum maintains a research library and archive of historical documents, making materials accessible for scholars studying the period from 1796 to 1918.
Among the museum's treasures stands a collection of weapons belonging to Joachim Murat, including hunting rifles and a flintlock pistol made by Boutet in 1804.
