Parco regionale storico di Monte Sole

The Historical Regional Park of Monte Sole covers 6,300 hectares across the Reno and Setta river valleys in the Bolognese Apennines. The protected area blends natural landscape with memorial sites and archaeological remains from past centuries.

The memorial park was established in 1989 following the execution of hundreds of civilians by Nazi forces between September 29 and October 5, 1944. This tragic event shaped the site as a place of remembrance.

The territory holds remains of ancient Etruscan settlements, including Pian di Misano, which functioned as a trading center linking central Italy with continental Europe. These archaeological traces show how communities thrived here thousands of years ago.

The park is accessible by train from Bologna with regular connections to nearby stations. Numerous marked trails run through the protected area, allowing visitors to explore according to their interests and fitness levels.

The park contains 936 plant species, representing roughly one-third of Emilia-Romagna's total flora. This biodiversity supports populations of wolves, deer, and around 60 bird species.
