Maria Teresa Bridge, 19th century bridge in Turin, Italy
The Maria Teresa Bridge spans 127 meters across the river Po, connecting two central neighborhoods of Turin with its iron construction and pedestrian walkways.
Built in 1840 as Turin's second bridge over the Po River, the structure was designed by French engineer Paul Lehaitre using advanced iron construction methods.
The bridge received its name from Maria Teresa of Habsburg-Lorraine, wife of King Carlo Alberto, representing the strong connections between Italy and Austria.
The structure underwent multiple repairs due to structural issues throughout its existence until its closure in 1897 and subsequent replacement by Umberto I Bridge.
The bridge served as a vital connection between Viale del Re and Borgo del Rubatto, now known as Borgo Crimea, before its demolition in 1906.
