Santuario della Beata Vergine di Castelmonte

The Santuario della Beata Vergine di Castelmonte is a sanctuary located at about 618 meters in the Julian Prealps, with sweeping views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The complex includes a church, defensive walls, and monastic structures arranged within an enclosed compound.

The site began as a Roman garrison protecting Forum Iulii from attack, then transformed into a religious center after a chapel was built in 1175. A lightning strike in 1469 destroyed the wooden Madonna, leading to the creation of the stone statue that stands there today.

The black Madonna with child statue draws pilgrims who come to pray and connect with centuries-old devotion at this sacred place. The image remains central to how locals and visitors experience the sanctuary today.

The sanctuary can be reached by car or on foot via a marked hiking trail from Cividale del Friuli. It is best to plan your visit during daylight hours and check opening times before going.

Fifteen roadside shrines line the pilgrimage path to the sanctuary, each depicting mysteries of the rosary to guide visitors spiritually on their journey. These markers trace a traditional route that believers have walked for centuries.
