Santi Pietro e Biagio

Santi Pietro e Biagio is a Gothic church in Cividale del Friuli with a single nave and exposed wooden roof trusses visible overhead. The walls display frescoes from different centuries, giving the interior a rich layering of artistic work across time.

The current structure was built in the 15th century, but it rose from the ruins of an older church that had been severely damaged by flooding. This rebuilding happened after a devastating flood in 1468 destroyed the original 13th-century building.

The entrance portal shows the work of architects Biagio de' Meritis and Antonio de Locria, who applied gothic ornaments with floral motifs to this sacred space. The style of this doorway reveals the artistic preferences of the Renaissance period in this region.

The church is located near the Tempietto Longobardo in the Brossana district and can be easily reached on foot. It makes sense to visit both sites together since they are very close to each other and enhance your understanding of the area.

The facade features work by artists from the Tolmezzo school, painters who followed the later Renaissance style and brought local artistic character to their commissions. These regional painters depicted well-known holy figures like Saint Christopher and Saint George in their own distinctive style.
