Serra del Prete, Mountain summit in province of Potenza, Italy
Serra del Prete is a mountain summit in the province of Potenza that reaches 2,181 meters (7,156 feet) in elevation with broad limestone ridges forming the landscape. The peak sits within the Pollino mountain range and has a central depression that distinguishes its overall shape.
This limestone formation developed as part of the Pollino mountain range and stands as a major peak in the region. In February 2010, an avalanche occurred on the northeastern slope, carving out a 500-meter path that marked the first recorded incident of this kind since 1990.
The mountain sits within Pollino National Park, established in 1993, where regulations protect natural resources and restrict activities like camping and fires.
Several hiking routes lead from Colle d'Impiso to the summit, with summer ascents suitable for regular hikers of moderate experience. Winter climbs require mountaineering gear and high-altitude mountain experience.
The central depression of the mountain provides natural shelter from strong winds that strike the surrounding peaks, making it a distinctive geographic feature. This formation creates different conditions between the protected depression and the exposed ridges.
