Dornsberg Castle, Medieval castle in Naturns, Italy.
Dornsberg Castle is a granite fortress built on a hillside overlooking the Vinschgau Valley below. The structure features defensive towers and narrow windows positioned to survey the surrounding landscape.
The castle was constructed in 1217 and served as a strategic fortification controlling valley passage. Its location allowed monitoring of routes between Bolzano and Merano.
The castle reflects South Tyrolean building traditions through its stone masonry combining Italian and Germanic construction methods. Visitors can see how local builders adapted both styles to work with the local granite.
The castle is reached via marked hiking trails from Naturns, with parking available near the start of the access path. The climb involves moderate hiking and sturdy shoes are recommended.
The structure retains original medieval defensive features such as arrow slits and watchtowers. These were positioned around the perimeter to keep watch over the entire surrounding area.
