Villa Imperiale Scassi, Renaissance villa in Sampierdarena, Italy
Villa Imperiale Scassi is a Renaissance villa in Sampierdarena with a stone facade featuring a central portico decorated with stucco work. The building spreads across multiple terraces that open toward a garden set on the sloping hillside.
The villa was built between 1560 and 1564 by architects Domenico and Giovanni Ponzello for Prince Vincenzo Imperiale. It later received Empress Elisabeth Christine as a guest in 1712.
The interior displays frescoes by Giovanni Carlone showing biblical scenes, along with decorative works by Bernardo Castello and sculptures by Marcello Sparzo. These artworks continue to shape the character of the rooms and reflect Renaissance artistic taste.
The site now houses a middle school and borders a hospital, with several entrances providing access to public gardens. Visitors can explore the green spaces, though they may be limited during school hours.
The villa earned the nickname 'La Bellezza' for its architectural beauty, and the original gardens contained an artificial lake with an aviary. This water feature once played a significant role in shaping the overall appearance of the estate.
