Santuario di Maria Santissima di Belvedere

The Santuario di Maria Santissima di Belvedere is a church building in neoclassical style that incorporates a natural cave system divided into two distinct sections. These sections connect to the main sanctuary through an internal staircase, creating a unified sacred space that blends architecture with natural geology.

The sanctuary was built in its current form during 1875, replacing earlier structures at this sacred site. Restoration work led by Commander Alfredo Dentice di Frasso later ensured the building's preservation and maintenance.

The Madonna of Belvedere holds a central place in local devotion and serves as the patron saint of Carovigno. Representations of this figure appear throughout the town, reflecting her deep connection to residents' daily lives and traditions.

The sanctuary is open daily to visitors, though opening and closing times change with the seasons. Visitors should plan their visit accordingly, as summer hours differ noticeably from winter schedules.

Two crypts within the natural caves feature majolica floors from the 19th century decorated with Greek and Latin cross symbols. These ornately decorated floors represent a remarkable example of ceramic craftsmanship from that era and are worth examining closely.
