Fullonica of Stephanus

The Fullonica of Stephanus is an ancient laundry facility in Pompeii with multiple basins and equipment for washing and drying textiles. The rooms show where workers processed fabrics and reveal the layout of different work stages.

After the earthquake of 62 CE, this residential building was converted into a commercial laundry operation. The transformation shows how Pompeii's residents adapted their homes to new economic needs.

The inner courtyard basin (impluvium), originally designed in Roman homes to collect rainwater, was repurposed here as a large washing tub. This practical adaptation shows how Romans cleverly converted their spaces for commercial activities.
