Autodromo di Morano sul Po, Automobile circuit
The Autodromo di Morano sul Po is a racing track near Pontestura in the Piemonte region. The circuit is about 2.5 kilometers long, roughly 11 meters wide, and runs near the Po River with eight turns, six turning right and two turning left. Today the site is overgrown with grass and bushes, with only parts of the old asphalt surface and abandoned areas still visible.
The track opened in 1973 and was a popular venue for Italian Formula 3 racing in its early years, attracting up to 100,000 spectators annually. After complaints about noise, racing stopped in 1975, and in 1977 about 500 meters of the track were demolished with a bulldozer to prevent illegal races.
The name refers to the nearby village of Morano sul Po and its position in the river valley. This abandoned site has become a quiet place of memory for Italian racing culture, where local enthusiasts preserve the history of motorsport and visit the old track as a symbol of a past era.
The site is freely accessible today, though most areas are covered with grass and vegetation. There are no regular visitor services or facilities on site, so visitors should wear comfortable shoes and weather-appropriate clothing and expect rough conditions.
The famous driver Arturo Merzario, who also raced in Formula 1, set a lap record on this track in a Ferrari of just over one minute. This place retains the memory of an extraordinary pilot whose performance remains part of the racing history of this region.
