Spiaggia Torre Pali, Sandy beach in Torre Pali, Italy
Spiaggia Torre Pali is a beach with pale sand and turquoise water along the southern coast of Apulia. A stone fortification rises partially from the water and defines the shoreline.
The fortification was built in the 16th century when seaborne attackers posed a constant threat. The tower helped local communities defend against raids.
The tower's name comes from the Latin word for post, reflecting what these watchtowers represented. Today the ruins shape how locals and visitors experience the beach landscape.
The beach provides shade structures and loungers for rent plus marked swimming zones. Lifeguards patrol during summer months to keep swimmers safe.
A few hundred meters from shore sits an underwater island formation called Isola della Fanciulla. Experienced swimmers can reach this spot and discover another side of the beach.
