Grotta dei Santi

The Grotta dei Santi complex is situated on the southern side of Poggio dei Santi hill, near the Amerillo River at 600 meters above sea level.

The cave system originated as a Christian burial ground during the Late Roman Empire period, later evolving into a monastic settlement under Byzantine rule.

The cave features rock-cut sarcophagi and preserved pictorial decorations on canopy tombs, reflecting architectural techniques from multiple historical periods.

The site is accessible via the old state road 194, with a small path leading to two terraced levels containing underground chambers and catacombs.

Archaeological evidence indicates continuous human presence spanning over a millennium, from late antiquity through the 15th century, with signs of prehistoric settlements.
