Abbazia di San Michele di Lamoli

Abbazia di San Michele di Lamoli is a Benedictine monastery in Borgo Pace with a church featuring three naves and a raised presbytery. Beneath the church lies a crypt containing medieval artwork from the Umbrian school of art.

The monastery was founded in 543, shortly after Saint Benedict's death, and received official recognition in 1218. During the medieval period, it exercised control over several castles in the surrounding area.

The church interior displays frescoes from the 15th century created by artists from the Umbrian region, showing religious scenes and figures. These artworks reflect the spiritual importance this monastery held for the surrounding community over many centuries.

The monastery is located in a remote area and requires careful planning to reach it from the coast or inland regions. Be mindful of possible road closures in mountain passes, especially if traveling from the direction of Tuscany or Umbria.

A painting of the Eternal Father with Angels by Raffaelin del Colle hangs in the church and has an unusual history. A thief who had stolen the artwork left it behind out of remorse.
