Colle Isarco Viaduct, highway bridge in Italy
Colle Isarco Viaduct is a road bridge near Sterzing that spans a steep valley, connecting Brenner with surrounding areas. The structure measures over 1,000 meters long and consists of 13 concrete sections connected by tension cables and supported by multiple tall piers.
The viaduct was built in 1969 and was a significant engineering achievement of its time, improving transportation infrastructure in the region. Over the decades, the structure has been maintained and reinforced multiple times, including major work in the late 1990s, 2007, and 2015.
The bridge sits on a busy road near the Brenner highway junction and offers viewpoints for photographs and observation of the surrounding mountains. Visitors can view the structure from various vantage points or appreciate the scale and height of the engineering feat while driving across it.
The bridge was built using an innovative cantilever method where concrete sections were progressively added and held together by external tension cables. These cables distribute vehicle loads and help the structure maintain stability across the decades.
