Madonna del Monte sanctuary

Madonna del Monte is a church on a hilltop overlooking Rovereto, featuring a baroque-rococo facade designed by Giovanni Scottini di Lizzana in 1751. Inside, a central fresco depicts the Madonna and Child above the altar.

The site was founded in 1603 when Monsignor Alessio Tomasini financed its construction as a place of worship. It closed temporarily in 1787 but was quickly reopened in 1790 following local demand.

The interior walls are covered with countless ex-voto offerings left by visitors over generations, creating a visual record of personal prayers and requests. These handmade objects turn the church into a living archive of faith and hope from the local community.

The sanctuary sits on a hilltop just outside Rovereto's center and can be reached on foot, by car, or by bicycle. The climb can be steep depending on which route you choose, so comfortable walking shoes are advisable.

The Consolata Missionaries have cared for this sanctuary since 1925 and managed to preserve it through damage from two world wars. This long-term dedication shaped it into a spiritual mountain refuge for the region.
