Military shrine of Castel Dante, Military cemetery in Rovereto, Italy.
The military shrine of Castel Dante is a cylindrical structure with a metal dome standing 34 m high on a mountain site overlooking Rovereto in Trentino. The memorial contains an underground crypt and is surrounded by an external square with displayed artillery pieces.
The shrine was inaugurated in 1933 as a resting place for 20,000 Italian and Austro-Hungarian soldiers who died during the First World War. It marks a memorial to one of the deadliest conflicts on Alpine soil.
The site preserves memory of soldiers from multiple nations who fought on the Italian front during the First World War. A bronze Via Crucis by artist G. Castiglioni contributes to the solemn character of the place.
The memorial site sits on a hilltop offering views over the town of Rovereto below. Visitor groups can arrange guided tours by contacting the site in advance.
A central opening in the roof permits natural light to reach the crypt where the bust of Commander Guglielmo Pecori Giraldi is housed. This officer played a key role in defending the area against Austrian forces during the war.
