Villa Branca, Gothic Revival villa in Baveno, Italy
Villa Branca is a Gothic Revival villa on the shores of Lake Maggiore in Baveno, featuring distinctive twin towers with pyramid-shaped roofs. Five large windows open onto a lakeside terrace decorated with classical statues, and the building stands on the waterfront directly facing the port.
British engineer Charles Henfrey built this villa between 1871 and 1873, originally calling it Villa Clara after his wife. The construction reflected the connections between British industrial figures and the Italian lakes during that era.
The building shows English Gothic style details that reflect how wealthy visitors brought international influences to lakeside villas in the late 1800s. You can see these foreign elements mixed with Italian design in the way the structure rises above the water.
The villa sits on the waterfront directly facing Baveno's port, easily visible from public paths along the shore. You can see it clearly from the Sempione state road that runs along the lake, making it accessible from various nearby points.
A fire in 2007 caused significant damage to the structure, leading to a careful reconstruction using historical photographs and old drawings. This restoration work preserved the original design and details that might otherwise have been lost.
