Higashikurume, Residential city in western Tokyo, Japan
Higashikurume is a residential city in the western section of the Tokyo metropolis, situated on the Musashino Terrace. The river runs through the western part of the territory, dividing the built areas into several low-lying plains.
The area belonged to Kitatama District in Kanagawa Prefecture before becoming an independent city in October 1970. Administrative reorganization merged several villages and transferred the land to Tokyo Prefecture.
Street names and neighborhood boundaries trace back to farming settlements, with water courses shaping daily routes and public spaces. Residents maintain a quiet lifestyle with small shops lining main roads and community centers anchoring local districts.
The Seibu Ikebukuro Line connects the city to central Tokyo, offering direct rides to the special wards. Local bus routes serve residential neighborhoods and parks along main roads.
Three large parks with natural springs and bamboo groves spread across the territory. Each park shows a different interplay of water and plants, taking advantage of the terrace topography.
