東禅寺, Buddhist temple in Nishitokyo, Japan.

Tozenji is a Buddhist temple in Nishitokyo featuring extensive gardens with over 2,800 trees representing 45 different species, creating a natural retreat within the urban area. The grounds include multiple structures, including the main hall and traditional buildings arranged among the green spaces.

Founded in 1610 near Edo Castle, the temple relocated to its current location in 1636 and served as a family temple for multiple daimyo families. Its move reflected the urban transformations of the region during the early Edo period.

The temple maintains connections with local residents through annual autumn concerts held inside the main hall, promoting community engagement.

The grounds are easily accessible on foot from the nearest train station and allow visitors to explore both the gardens and interior spaces. A leisurely walk through the different areas provides the best experience for observing the trees and structures.

The grounds contain Oksho-in Sengen-tei, a garden designated as a national historic site dating from the foreign legation period. This area remains relatively overlooked by visitors despite its historical significance.
