Nishitokyo, Residential city in western Tokyo, Japan
Nishitokyo is a residential city within the western portion of Tokyo metropolis, sitting on the flat Musashino plateau. Two smaller rivers run through the area, and the city lies between the larger urban centers of the metropolitan region.
The city formed in early 2001 when two neighboring municipalities in western Tokyo merged. Both places had long histories as rural settlements and grew into residential neighborhoods after the Second World War as the capital region expanded.
The Tanashi Shrine, dating from the 13th century, hosts the annual Yaoyorozu no Sanpoichi market in May, featuring local artisans, musicians, and traditional food vendors.
The city offers multilingual information services for international residents and publishes monthly updates in several languages. Visitors will find clear signage throughout the area for waste sorting and other everyday routines.
An illuminated tower in the Tanashi district displays weather forecasts for the following day through changing colors. Local residents have used this system for years as a practical guide in daily life.
