Shiroi, Residential city in Chiba Prefecture, Japan
Shiroi is a residential city in Chiba Prefecture located about 25 kilometers from central Tokyo, situated on gently rolling terrain. The city spreads across mostly flat to slightly elevated areas with a mix of residential neighborhoods, small parks, and shopping districts.
After World War II, the United States Air Force operated a military base at this location, which remained active until the early 1960s. Once the military facility closed, the area gradually transformed into a residential center.
The name Shiroi, written as 白井 in Japanese characters, refers to white elements in the local landscape from centuries past. Today the city carries this connection in its identity while functioning as a modern residential area.
The city has schools and is well-connected for commuters, with train service linking it to larger urban areas. Visitors can explore the residential layout on foot, finding local shops and green spaces throughout the neighborhoods.
This area was primarily agricultural for most of its history before being transformed by the arrival of a new railway line in the late 1970s. The train connection suddenly made commuting to Tokyo practical for many people.
