Chiba Prefecture, Prefecture in eastern Kanto region, Japan.
Chiba stretches across the entire Boso Peninsula, bounded by the Pacific Ocean to the east and Tokyo Bay to the west. The administrative region includes coastal towns, inland settlements and agricultural areas running between the two bodies of water.
The area formed in 1873 through the merger of Inba and Kisarazu provinces, with the city of Chiba designated as its capital. This reform was part of a nationwide reorganization of administrative structures in the early Meiji era.
The area is known for its fresh seafood and local coastal markets where fishermen sell their daily catch directly. Visitors can observe how communities maintain their maritime traditions, especially during harbor festivals and the preparation of regionally typical grilled fish.
Narita International Airport in the northern section serves as the main gateway to the Tokyo metropolitan area, simplifying arrival for international visitors. Infrastructure connects urban centers with rural areas, with coastal roads offering direct access to beaches and fishing ports.
The prefecture hosts Tokyo Disneyland and DisneySea in Urayasu city, making it the only region outside the United States with multiple Disney theme parks. Many visitors do not realize these parks are technically located outside Tokyo, although they are often associated with the capital.
