Sanmu, Coastal city in Chiba Prefecture, Japan
Sanmu is a city in Chiba Prefecture that spreads across the Kujūkuri Plain in eastern Japan, where farmland and residential areas alternate between the inland fields and the Pacific shore. The landscape shifts from rice paddies and vegetable plots to coastal neighborhoods where fishing boats rest near sandy beaches and local commerce supports both farming and seaside communities.
The city formed in March 2006 through the merger of the towns of Sanbu, Matsuo and Naruto along with the village of Hasunuma. This administrative consolidation aimed to pool local resources and preserve the rural character of the region while developing new infrastructure.
Residents maintain agricultural traditions with local farmers cultivating crops in the fertile plains while preserving traditional woodworking techniques from past generations.
The area connects by rail to Tokyo and Narita Airport, allowing travelers to move between urban and rural Japan with relative ease. Those exploring the farming districts will find quieter paths outside harvest periods and can watch everyday rural life unfold along roads lined with vegetable fields.
The coastline here forms part of the long Kujūkuri Beach that runs for dozens of kilometers and counts among Japan's longest sandy shores. Along the waterfront stand small fishing shacks where daily catches are processed and nets hang out to dry in the sea breeze.
