Katsuura

Katsuura is a city on the southeastern coast of Chiba Prefecture, situated on hilly terrain that slopes toward the Pacific Ocean. The town spreads across a coastal area with natural harbors that have long served as fishing bases.

The area was controlled by the Tokugawa shogunate during the Edo period and gradually transformed into a city through the early to mid-20th century. This growth was driven by the region's fishing industry and its role as a marine trade center.

The Tomisaki Shrine displays thousands of Hina dolls during its seasonal celebration from late February to early March, reflecting the local tradition of praying for children's wellbeing. These dolls represent an important moment in the community's yearly calendar and draw visitors who appreciate traditional customs.

The daily morning market provides direct access to fresh seafood and local goods from fishermen and vendors, closed on Wednesdays. Visitors should arrive early for the best selection and wear sturdy shoes, as the market has wet surfaces.

The city's fishing port is one of the region's major distribution centers for particular fish species and handles substantial daily volumes of specialized catch. The scale and specialization of these operations make it one of the most active ports along the coast.
