Okitsu Castle

Okitsu Castle is a medieval hilltop fortress in Katsuura with remaining stone walls and defensive moats arranged in multiple protective rings. The site commands views over the surrounding landscape from its elevated position.

The fortress was founded in 1258 during the Kamakura period as a defensive stronghold for regional samurai clans. It remained an active military site through various periods of territorial conflict in the area.

The grounds reflect how feudal lords organized space to display power and control movement during the medieval period. Walking through the different sections, you can see how social rank determined where people could go.

The ruins are best explored on foot, with paths leading up steep sections to reach the upper areas. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water, especially on warmer days when the hilltop exposure offers little shade.

The surviving foundation stones and earthwork patterns reveal early Japanese castle-building methods from before the Sengoku period. These techniques would later influence how fortifications were designed across the country.
