Awamata Falls

Awamata Falls is a waterfall in Yoro Valley near Otaki that drops approximately 30 meters over multiple rock ledges. The water flows across a wide face of stone, breaking into several smaller cascades as it descends.

The site was originally known as Takataki, meaning High Falls, and gained its current name from a nearby village. The location began appearing on official maps starting in 1900.

The falls draw visitors who come to experience the natural power of flowing water and spend time surrounded by forest. Local people visit regularly to connect with this important landmark in their landscape.

You can reach the area by train, with service to Yoro Valley Station or Kazusa-Nakano Station available from nearby railways. Parking is available in town so you can leave your vehicle before heading to the falls.

The rock layers beneath the falls display an unusual geological formation where softer sandstone has eroded while harder mudstone layers remain intact. This contrast in stone types has shaped the waterfall's structure over time.
