Takahagi, Coastal city in Ibaraki, Japan

Takahagi is a coastal city in northern Ibaraki Prefecture that stretches along the Pacific Ocean. The landscape includes mountains inland and coastal areas with varying terrain and environments.

The city was established on November 23, 1954, through the merger of three municipalities: Matsubara, Takaoka, and Kurosaki. This consolidation combined separate communities into the present-day city.

Throughout the year, traditional festivals and ceremonies connect residents to their heritage through music and seasonal celebrations. These events shape how people experience their community and maintain their local traditions.

The JR Joban Line provides regular train service to the city with connections from major transportation hubs in the region. This rail access makes it straightforward to reach from other areas of Ibaraki.

The city was once a major coal mining center, but when the mines closed in the 1960s, it shifted toward manufacturing and food processing. This economic transformation allowed the city to build a new future after mining ended.
