Himakajima is an island in Mikawa Bay, Aichi Prefecture. The coastline runs for 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) and the highest point rises 30.2 meters (99 feet) above the water.
The island holds 35 burial mounds dating from the 6th and 7th centuries. During the Nara period, this place supplied shark skin and dried fish to the mainland.
Octopus and pufferfish are prepared using methods handed down through generations of fishing families. Visitors can taste these local specialties in small restaurants around the harbor.
High-speed boats from Morozaki Port take 10 minutes and run regularly throughout the day. Access begins at Kowa Station, which connects to the ferry terminal by local transport.
Two beaches take their names from the time of day: Sunrise Beach faces east and Sunset Beach faces west. Each shoreline offers different light and atmosphere depending on when you arrive.
