Kashima Shrine, Sacred Shinto shrine in Kashima, Japan

The main hall of Kashima Shrine displays nagare-zukuri architecture with extended eaves and a central prayer area surrounded by cedar trees.

Founded in ancient times, Kashima Shrine received numerous imperial visits and maintained its position as one of Japan's three most important imperial shrines until 1945.

The shrine dedicates its worship to Takemikazuchi, the deity of thunder and martial arts, maintaining strong connections with traditional Japanese swordsmanship schools.

Located in Ibaraki Prefecture, the shrine welcomes over 600,000 visitors during the first three days of January for New Year prayers and celebrations.

The shrine houses the Kaname-ishi stone, which according to mythology pins down a giant catfish responsible for causing earthquakes in Japan.
