Takadanobaba, College district in Shinjuku, Japan.
Takadanobaba is a lively university district in western Shinjuku, Tokyo, centered around one of Japan's busiest train stations. The area attracts a large student population with its mix of universities, affordable shops, and budget dining options.
Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu established a horseback riding ground here in 1636 on land owned by the Takata family, giving the neighborhood its present name. The area developed into a student quarter during the 20th century as several universities opened nearby.
The neighborhood features numerous Southeast Asian restaurants, including establishments serving Burmese food, Vietnamese sandwiches, and curry specialties.
The area around the station is easy to walk through throughout the day, with numerous budget eateries and shops catering to everyday needs. The BIGBOX building right next to the station houses shops, game centers, and karaoke rooms across multiple floors.
Director J.J. Abrams named the planet Takodana in Star Wars: The Force Awakens after this neighborhood. The station also plays the Astro Boy anime theme song daily as its departure melody.
