Marine World Uminonakamichi, Public aquarium in Higashi-ku, Japan
Marine World Uminonakamichi is a public aquarium in Higashi-ku that houses over 30,000 marine creatures representing 350 different species. The facility arranges its exhibits to mirror the diverse ocean environments found around Kyushu, from shallow coastal waters to deeper sea zones.
The facility began construction in March 1988 and officially opened to visitors in April 1989. Since then, the aquarium has served as a center for marine education in the Fukuoka region.
The facility presents daily sea lion performances and dolphin shows, demonstrating the natural behaviors and abilities of marine mammals to Japanese audiences.
The aquarium generally opens at 9:30 in the morning and closes at 5:30 in the evening, with longer hours during summer months. Visitors with mobility needs can access all areas without barriers, and parking for 388 vehicles is available on site.
A tank standing 5 meters high recreates the powerful waves of the Genkai Sea using moving water and bubbles. This recreation allows visitors to observe the dynamic conditions marine life experiences in the wild.
