Sagawa Art Museum

Sagawa Art Museum is an art museum in Moriyama, Japan, housing several exhibition spaces, landscaped gardens, and water features. The architecture connects indoor galleries with the surrounding landscape through large glass facades and open sight lines.

The museum opened in 1998, designed by Takenaka Corporation. The architecture later received the Good Design Award and the BCS Prize for its integration of building and landscape.

The building displays works by Japanese and European artists, with permanent galleries showing paintings, sculptures, and graphic design. The spaces also present temporary exhibitions that bring together contemporary and traditional art forms.

The museum sits near Lake Biwa and can be reached via the JR Kosei Line to Katata Station, followed by a 15-minute bus or taxi ride. The visit combines well with a walk along the lake shore, especially on clear days.

A special exhibition presents northern European painting from Norway, Sweden, and Finland. The selection brings Scandinavian traditions into dialogue with Japanese collecting culture and exhibition aesthetics.
