Hakone Museum of Art

The Hakone Museum of Art is a ceramics museum in Gōra that houses over 4,000 pieces arranged across interconnected gallery spaces built into the mountainside. The collection spans different periods of ceramic production and includes works ranging from functional ware to decorative pieces.

The museum opened in 1952 as a result of a vision to integrate art and natural landscape in a single location. The founder designed the buildings and grounds to work together as a unified artistic experience within the mountains.

Tea ceremony ceramics on display reflect deeply held Japanese values about form and function coming together in everyday objects. Visitors can see how these vessels shaped social gatherings and expressed respect through careful craftsmanship.

Buses from Gōra Station provide regular access to the museum, which offers wheelchair ramps and English signage throughout the space. The site sits on sloped terrain with stairs connecting different gallery areas, so comfortable shoes are worth considering for your visit.
