Usakumai Sites

The Usakumai Sites are several excavation locations near the Naibetsu River where remains of ancient settlements have been uncovered. Different areas have information signs explaining what was found and why these discoveries matter.

These sites show how hunter-gatherers lived in this region over a long time and adapted to different environments. The area became officially recognized as a Historic Site of Japan in 1979.

The pottery and clay figurines found here show how ancient people made everyday items and what they valued. These objects reveal something about their crafts and their way of thinking about the world.

You can reach these excavation grounds easily from central Chitose on foot or by car. Informational signs in Japanese and English are placed throughout to help you understand the different areas.
