Mietsu Naval Dock, Military facility and UNESCO World Heritage Site in Saga, Japan.
The Mietsu Naval Dock contains remnants of a dry dock facility with metal furnaces and timber structures that showcase 19th-century maritime engineering methods.
Built in 1858 during the late Edo Period, this naval dock became instrumental in Japan's adoption of Western shipbuilding techniques during the Meiji industrial revolution.
The facility includes the Sano Tsunetami and Mietsu Naval Dock History Museum, which documents Japan's naval development and maritime traditions.
Located 30 minutes from Saga Station by bus, visitors can access the site through hourly services to Sano-Mietsu Rekishikan Iriguchi stop for 550 yen.
Archaeological excavations in 2009 revealed original structures, which were subsequently reburied for preservation, making the physical site invisible to current visitors.
