Yabiji

Yabiji is a coral reef system off Miyakojima's coast composed of multiple separate reefs scattered across a large marine area. The waters here are typically very clear, offering good visibility for underwater exploration.

The reef became known internationally after a ship ran aground here in 1797, an event that led to its marking on nautical charts. This incident brought the location to the attention of maritime navigators worldwide.

The waters here have long been central to local fishing communities and remain woven into the daily life and traditions of island residents today.

The best way to visit is by joining a snorkeling or diving tour departing from Hirara Port, with the boat journey taking about an hour. Visitors should be prepared for time on the water and may want to bring seasickness remedies if prone to motion sickness.

During certain tidal conditions, especially around the third lunar month, parts of the reef surface can rise above the waterline. This rare phenomenon reveals the reef structure that normally remains hidden beneath the waves.
