Tonegawa Bridge, Road bridge across Tone River between Kuki and Koga, Japan
Tonegawa Bridge is a road bridge over the Tone River, linking the city of Kuki in Saitama Prefecture to Koga in Ibaraki Prefecture. It carries several traffic lanes and has a dedicated pedestrian path running along its side.
The bridge was built as part of efforts to improve road connections between Saitama and Ibaraki prefectures during Japan's modernization of the Kanto region. It replaced older, less reliable crossings that could no longer handle the growing flow of traffic.
The bridge is a daily crossing point for people moving between the two cities on foot, by bicycle, or by car. In spring, the riverbanks nearby draw visitors who come to see the cherry blossoms along the water.
Walking or cycling across the bridge gives a clear view of the Tone River and is more comfortable than crossing by car. Both Kuki and Koga have train stations nearby, so the bridge fits naturally into a longer trip through the area.
The Tone River is one of the widest rivers on the Kanto plain, and from the bridge the water can look almost like a small sea on certain days. This surprises many visitors who do not expect such a wide stretch of water this far inland.
