Nagoe Pass, Ancient mountain pass between Kamakura and Miura Peninsula, Japan
The narrow passage through steep cliffs extends for several hundred meters with walls reaching heights of over ten meters along the route.
During the Kamakura period of 1185-1333, this strategic passage functioned as one of the seven key entry points into the capital city.
The Mandara Michi Yagura burial caves within the pass contain important archaeological evidence of medieval Japanese funeral practices and religious rituals.
Visitors can access the pass year-round without entrance fees, though the Mandara Michi Yagura caves open only during spring and autumn weekends.
The artificial cliffs along the Zushi section remain intact, displaying the advanced engineering capabilities of medieval Japanese builders in mountain excavation.
