Nakoku-no-oka Historical Park, Archaeological park in Kasuga, Japan
Nakoku-no-oka Historical Park is an archaeological site in Kasuga containing burial grounds and remains from the Yayoi period. The excavations reveal over 300 graves, including pottery tombs, earthen pit burials, and wooden coffin graves preserved in their original positions.
The site developed during the Yayoi period when the Nakoku community had contact with China. The kingdom later gained recognition from Chinese rulers, establishing early diplomatic connections with the Han court.
The park reveals how Yayoi-period communities lived and connected with distant peoples through trade. Bronze mirrors from China and glass beads show the breadth of these ancient exchanges.
The park is reachable from Minami-Fukuoka Station, which is about 20 minutes' walk away. Visitors should allow time to explore the displayed artifacts and burial grounds, as the site is easy to navigate on foot.
Many graves are intentionally left in their original excavation positions to show visitors the research methods used. This arrangement lets you see the burial sites as archaeologists discovered them.
