Sugu-Okamoto Site

The Sugu-Okamoto Site is an archaeological location in the northern hills of Kasuga that preserves remains from the Yayoi period. Excavations have uncovered hundreds of jar coffins, wooden graves, and ritual structures scattered across the hillside.

The site was the center of an ancient kingdom dating back roughly 2,000 years, revealing how communities organized themselves during that era. Excavations have shown this was an important location for the people who lived there.

The burial grounds reveal how ancient people honored their dead and what objects they believed were needed in the afterlife. Walking through the site, you can sense the religious practices and social structure that shaped this community.

The site sits on hillside terrain, so wear comfortable shoes for walking across the uneven ground at your own pace. Visit during daylight hours to properly see the excavated areas and understand the layout of the ancient burial grounds.

A massive stone once covered a royal burial and still rests at the site where it was placed thousands of years ago. This heavy block reveals how communities invested significant effort to honor their leaders and protect important graves.
